So we’ve compared the new Canon RF 135mm F1.8L IS USM with the $1600 (at launch) manual focus Zeiss APO Sonnar T* 2/135 which was introduced in September 2012. We have also compared the new Canon with the EF-mount predecessor the EF 135mm F2.0L USM. This model was about $1070 when it was released in April 1996, some 27 years ago.
The 100mm F2.8 L IS USM Macro performs very well even on the resolution-hungry APS-C format. Sharpness is high and fairly even across the frame, chromatic aberration is low, and distortion and falloff minimal. Despite not being on its 'native' format, the results are close to the excellent Olympus Zuiko Digital 50mm F2 Macro, and clearly better
The focus ring feel pretty smooth without any significant wobbling. The lens features a ring-type USM AF drive (rear focusing) with full-time manual focusing in one-shot AF mode. The color balance of this 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II seems to match my other Canon EF lenses. The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 USM has less distortion than any other moderate tele zoom I've ever tested. It's got some barrel distortion at 70mm and some pincushion distortion at 200mm, but never very much at any setting.
I'd get my RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM at Adorama, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or eventually used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay. New intro top. Canon's first 100-300mm f/2.8.
