The book begins in a depressive tone, as Telemachus and Penelope despair of ever seeing Odysseus again and the situation with the suitors is becoming dire. We first hear about Odysseus in the opening lines, when he is Amphinomos Sometimes spelled Amphinomus. The good suitor, relatively speaking: his "heart saddened within him, shaking his head, for in his spirit he saw the evil" (18.153-54). Penelope seems to recognize this, as does Odysseus; he even warns Amphinomos to get out before the slaughter. Unfortunately, Athene wants everyone to die. TheOdyssey, Book 17, lines 396-399.
